The basement. I know what you're thinking, MOTH BALLS, bugs and spider webs. No? Okay maybe that's just me. We can agree that household basements are used to store those forgettable items, you know, the ones that you don't use on the day-to-day, or month-to-month, or decade-to-decade, or probably ever. Which means things might be a little out of hand when it finally comes to moving time. But that's okay, here are some tips to help you get everything ready for moving day.
First things First, Downsizing
It might finally be time to get rid of some stuff. If you pick it up and say, ?I don't think I need this? followed by, ?No, wait. I definitely need this promotional musket with a stenciled beer name on it.? Ah, yeah... you probably don't need it.
Where were we? Right, downsizing. This is actually an opportunity to part with some of your treasurers (y'know, so you can get new ones), and ultimately lighten the size of your load and moving costs. Also, the less you pack means less you must unpack.
But what to do with those treasures that are on the chopping block? Here are some ideas!
Donate!
This is where your generosity can really make a difference. Whether it be to a local women's shelter, Goodwill, or Salvation Army... those items can really help. Of course, they won't take all of your fancy items, but maybe you can also plan a...
Yard Sale!
That's right. Letting go of the musket might earn you some cold, hard, cash. So, if you find yourself with a bit of extra time before your move, lug some of those things out of your cellar, plop them on your lawn, and watch the dollars roll in.
Last things Last, Pack and Move
So now you finally got your basement down to the essentials, it's time to pack your items, so start with the small stuff. These items tend to take the most time and can in some cases require a little more attention. Try to pair and pack similar items. This will make it easier in the long run. Both having the items fit together nicely in the box (assuring that they'll survive the transit), and removing the headache on the other end, as you will have your unpacking organized for you.
Oh, and here's something important. Remember size and weight. You don't want to get to the top of the stairs and that box won't fit through the door... no ship in the bottle here! Also, you don't want to get half-way up the stairs and mutter, ?I don't got it.? All joking aside, either situation can be hazardous. So size and weight are important when moving thing upstairs form a basement. Remember, just because it got down there easily doesn't mean that the same is true for getting up out of there.
For the bigger items don't go it alone, you can really hurt yourself (can't stress this enough) so make sure you have the help you need to lug those big, heavy furniture items up the basement stairs safely.
Have your friends disappeared because they have that ?thing? they need to go to? Are those stairs looking pretty formidable? Don't worry, we have you covered. Give us a call today, the professionals at Ship Smart are always happy to help you with your small move!
